❓ Which route is best for Leh Ladakh road trip – Manali or Srinagar?
Short answer: Manali-Leh highway (490 km) is more adventurous with high passes like Rohtang and Baralacha La. Srinagar-Leh (434 km) is more scenic with green valleys. If you want thrill, choose Manali. If you fear altitude, choose Srinagar. Both need 2 days drive.
Let me explain like a friend 👇
Manali route has 4 crazy high passes. You will see snow in July! But roads are rough near Tanglang La. Srinagar route is smoother. You drive along river Indus. Also, Kargil war memorial is on Srinagar route. I did both. Manali gives you “real ladakh feel”. But if you have kids or old parents, pick Srinagar. 🚐

❓ What documents and permits do I need for Ladakh road trip?
Short answer: You need Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, and Tso Moriri. Also carry original driving license, vehicle RC, insurance, and PUC certificate. For foreigners – Protected Area Permit (PAP) costs ₹1500 + group of 2 minimum. Get online or at DC office Leh.
Now details – don’t skip else fine of ₹5000! 😱
Indian tourists: ILP is ₹600 for 7 days. You can also get it online at https://ilp.ladakh.gov.in (takes 10 mins). Print 2 copies. For bike trips, keep original bike papers. Also carry 2 passport photos – many checkposts ask randomly. Do it before reaching Leh city. Avoid last moment rush.
Foreigners: PAP is different. You need a registered tour agent. Cost ₹1500 per person plus agent fee. Minimum 2 people in group. Processing takes 24 hours. No online for PAP yet. Better reach Leh 2 days early.
🎯 My unique finding after 3 trips: Most people forget to carry digital copies on phone + physical copies. At North Pullu checkpost, my friend had no printout – he paid ₹200 bribe. Keep both to stay safe.
| Health issue | How common? | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) | 35% of tourists get mild symptoms | Drink 4L water + Diamox (125mg 2x day) |
| Breathing trouble at night | Common above 11,000 ft | Stay in Leh first 2 days without moving |
| Car breakdown | 20% on Manali-Leh highway | Carry jumper cables + extra tire |

🛣️ My 7 secret hacks (you won’t find on other blogs)
These are short. Read each like a friend’s advice.
1. Start at 5 AM sharp. Why? Army opens roads from 6 AM to 11 AM only at high passes. If you start late, you are stuck till next day.
2. Fuel secret: Last petrol pump before Khardung La is at South Pullu. Fill your tank there. After that, no petrol for 150 km. Many bikers push bike. Don’t be that person. ⛽
3. Book homestays, not hotels. In Nubra Valley, homestay costs ₹800 with food. Hotel costs ₹3500 without food. Use GoLadakh homestay list (no fancy website, call direct).
4. Carry cash – big secret! In Pangong Tso, there is no ATM. Last ATM is in Leh city. Many card machines don’t work due to low network. I saw a family crying because no cash. Take at least ₹10,000 cash per person.
5. Rent bike from Leh, not Manali. Why? Bikes from Manali often break near Upshi. Rent from Leh’s “Royal Brothers” or “Ladakh Bikers”. Ask for Royal Enfield Himalayan (more stable). Daily rent ₹2000-2500 including helmet.
6. Download offline maps. Google Maps doesn’t work in most areas. Use Maps.me or OSMAnd. Download “Ladakh region” before starting. I got lost near Tso Kar – Maps.me saved me. 📱
7. Don’t skip acclimatization. I know you want to go to Pangong directly. But altitude sickness is real. Spend 2 nights in Leh (11,500 ft) doing nothing. Just drink water and walk slow. That’s the only rule.

💰 How much money will you need? (2026 realistic)
| Item | Budget travel (₹) | Comfort travel (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel (round trip from Manali) | 8000 (bike) | 18000 (SUV) |
| Accommodation (8 nights) | 6400 (₹800/night homestay) | 20000 (₹2500/night hotel) |
| Permits + entry fees | 1200 | 1200 |
| Food & water | 5000 | 10000 |
| Emergency buffer | 3000 | 5000 |
| Total (10 days) | ₹23,600 | ₹54,200 |
💡 My tip: Mix it. Stay 2 nights in good hotel + 6 nights in homestay. Saves money but gives comfort.
🚘 Bike or car – which wins in Ladakh?
Bike pros: More fun, cheaper (₹2000/day rent), easy to cross narrow roads. But you will be cold and tired. Rain is your enemy.
Car pros: Safe, warm, carry more luggage. But expensive (₹6000-8000/day for Xylo/Innova). Also car gets stuck in slush near Nubra.
Here’s my honest rating after 3 trips:
- 🔹 Royal Enfield Himalayan: 9/10 (best for Ladakh)
- 🔹 Toyota Innova: 8/10 (comfort king but high cost)
- 🔹 Activa/Scooty: 2/10 (please don’t – small tires fail on gravel)

❓ Quick answers to voice search questions
Can I do Leh Ladakh trip in December? No, most passes close after October. Only few get to Leh via flight. Roads are ice.
Do I need 4x4 car for Ladakh? Not necessary. A front-wheel drive works on main highways. But for Turtuk or Hanle, take 4x4.
Is Ladakh safe for solo female traveller? Yes, very safe. Locals are helpful. But always book homestays with family. Avoid night driving.
What is the number one mistake? Not drinking water. At high altitude, you need 5-6 litres per day. Dehydration looks like altitude sickness. Drink even if not thirsty. 💧
⚡ One last insider secret (not on Google): On Manali-Leh highway, there is a small dhaba called “Maggi Point” just before Baralacha La. They make the world’s best butter garlic maggi. Also, they have oxygen cylinders for free. Stop there. Thank me later.
